Where to Stay in Kyoto in Autumn: How to Choose the Area and Hotel

Kyoto is busy in autumn, and where you stay affects how much of your day goes to waiting for buses and walking with bags. This guide helps you choose the area and the hotel. For when the colors are expected, see our guide to Kyoto autumn leaves.

Step 1: Decide what matters most

Think about how you want your days to feel. Do you want to walk to temples in the evening, be close to the shinkansen for day trips, or have a quiet base away from the crowds? Your answer points to the area.

Step 2: Choose the area

Near Kyoto Station: this is the easiest base for trains, the shinkansen and buses. It suits short stays and day trips. The JR Sagano Line takes about 11 minutes by rapid service from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama, according to the Kyoto City Official Travel Guide. It also advises boarding from the back of the platform, because the cars at the front are crowded.

Gion and Higashiyama: you can reach many temples and old streets on foot, and the area is atmospheric in the evening. Getting there from Kyoto Station is the weak point. The EX100 limited express bus takes about 15 minutes to Gion, but it runs only on weekends, public holidays, the Obon period and the New Year holidays, and it can be full in the morning. On other days, the Kyoto City Official Travel Guide suggests going by subway and train instead.

Central Kyoto: the area around the main shopping streets and subway lines is a practical base if you want easy access to restaurants and several parts of the city.

Arashiyama: it is quiet in the evening and good for a slower stay. It is farther from the other main areas, so plan your transport each day. The Kyoto City Official Travel Guide says buses from Kyoto Station to Arashiyama are crowded and slow. It suggests the JR line, or the subway and the Randen tram, instead.

Step 3: Choose the hotel

Once you have the area, compare these points.

  • Walking time to the nearest station, with your bags. Kyoto City asks visitors not to bring large luggage onto city buses. Its Hands Free Kyoto program arranges luggage delivery and storage, so check whether your hotel can help.
  • Check-in and check-out times, and whether the hotel will keep your bags before you check in.
  • Room size, bedding and bath. A ryokan is a different style of stay. See our guide on how to choose a luxury ryokan in Kyoto.
  • Meals. If dinner is included, ask about the time and dietary needs. If you plan to eat out, see our guide to kaiseki in Kyoto.

Step 4: Book early, and read the cancellation terms

Autumn is one of the busiest seasons, and good rooms go first. Book as soon as your dates are fixed. Colors change with the weather, so consider a rate that lets you cancel or change your dates for free, and read the terms before you confirm.

Step 5: Check the accommodation tax

Kyoto City charges an accommodation tax per person per night, and the amount depends on the room rate. Check whether it is included in the price or paid at the hotel. Details are on the city’s leaflet.
