Kyoto Autumn Leaves: When to Go and How to Plan Your Stay

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to visit Kyoto. Maple trees around temples, gardens and hillsides turn red, and ginkgo trees turn gold. It is also one of the city’s busiest seasons. This guide covers when the colors are expected and how to plan your stay around the crowds.

When to go

The timing changes every year with the weather. In its second forecast for 2026, published on October 14, Japan Meteorological Corporation expected the autumn color season in Arashiyama, Kyoto, to begin around November 13, about the same as last year. It said peak viewing across western Japan is expected around the usual time or later, because temperatures are expected to stay above average through November. Forecasts are updated during the season, so check the latest one before you fix your dates, and again a few weeks before you travel.

Step 1: Book your stay early

The best ryokan and hotels in Kyoto fill up early in autumn. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, and read the cancellation terms before you confirm. Kyoto also charges an accommodation tax per person per night. See our guide on how to choose a luxury ryokan in Kyoto.

Step 2: Start early in the day

Popular temples and gardens get more crowded as the day goes on. Plan to arrive at opening time, and visit the best-known places on a weekday if you can.

Step 3: Consider an evening visit

Several temples hold special night viewings in autumn, when the leaves are lit up after dark. For example, Kodaiji in Higashiyama has announced its 2026 autumn night viewing for October 23 to December 13. Dates, hours and entry rules differ by temple and change every year, so check each temple’s official website before you go.

Step 4: Travel light

Kyoto City asks visitors not to bring large luggage onto city buses, because it adds to crowding and makes it harder for residents to use them. Its official Hands Free Kyoto program lists luggage delivery between Kyoto Station and your accommodation, and luggage storage around the city. Send your bags ahead and keep your day for sightseeing.

Step 5: Consider a private guide

A private guide can plan a route around the busiest places and handle transport between areas. See our guide on how to choose a private tour in Kyoto.

Step 6: Be a considerate visitor

Many of Kyoto’s sights are close to where people live. Follow each temple’s rules on photography and paths, and do not stop in narrow lanes. Kyoto City publishes guidelines for visitors.
